NEW CASTLE - Craig County High School students made a good showing in their first entry in the Mountain Academic Competition Conference tournament held recently at Christiansburg High School.
The Craig County teams placed fourth in social studies, fifth in math and ninth each in English and science. All the teams together placed seventh in an all-around category.
Keith Rowland, tournament director, said this was "not bad" for first-year teams. Rowland is assistant principal of Christiansburg High School.
Tournament winners were Blacksburg High in math, Carroll County High in English, Rocky Gap High in social studies and Radford High in science and all-around.
Craig County students who competed in the tournament were Jeff Ford, Aaron Hendrick, Tracy Draine and Keith Lane in math; Mike Reynolds, Jim Robertson, John Lee and Sharon Springer in social studies; Stacey Bradley, Lori Reynolds, Donna Keffer and Janet Trent, English; Mike Jones, Jamie Stanley, Tina Trenor and Jason Hubbard in science.
The Craig County coaches were Kim Hendrick and Carol Taylor in English; Jackie Cantley, science; Fran Ford, math; and John Crenshaw, social studies.
There were 16 teams competing in each subject. They came from high schools throughout Southwest Virginia.
