MORGAN'S SHOT WINS BENEFIT

Richard Morgan organized the all-star basketball game Thursday at Salem High School, so it seemed fitting that he won it, too.

The former Salem High and University of Virginia guard made a fallaway jumper with four seconds left to lift the white-shirted all-stars to a 169-168 victory against their black-jerseyed opponents.

Former Virginia Tech star Bimbo Coles led the White team with 48 points. Former Cavaliersstar Mel Kennedy topped the Black team with 49.

Morgan won the slam-dunk contest at halftime, beating former VMI guard Damon Williams and former UVa player Bill Batts. The other VMI twin, Ramon Williams, won the 3-point shooting contest against Duke's Phil Henderson and Morgan.

Morgan estimated each player except himself would receive between $75-100 for playing in the game. He said any other profit would go to the Salem High basketball program. About 350 people attended at $5 each.

"For the amount of stars we had here, I was kind of disappointed at the turnout," said Morgan, who said a similar game last week in Galax drew 1,000 fans.

For the White team, Henderson added 45 points and Morgan 37. For the Black, Radford's Tim Penn and Ramon Williams each had 35, and Damon Williams scored 30.
