EARTH DAY EVENTS SET IN JEFFERSON FOREST

The staff of Western Virginia's Jefferson National Forest has planned activities centered on Earth Day.

The biggest celebration will be at High Knob in the forest's Clinch Ranger District in Wise County, where the forest was first designated 53 years ago.

More than 20 sponsors will be involved in activities from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday that include speakers, music, hikes, food and guest appearances by Woodsy Owl and Smokey Bear.

At the Fenwick Mines Wetlands in the New Castle Ranger District in Craig County, a program of hikes and environmental education will be conducted Sunday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Environmental education stations will be set up to interpret the area's geology, wildlife and fish habitat, and a demonstration of recreation planning and trail construction also will be provided.

The National Forest Information Center at Natural Bridge in the Glenwood Ranger District will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday to provide information about forest programs and attractions and to pass out free white pine seedlings.

The forest headquarters office in Roanoke will have a display at Earth Day activities at the Roanoke Civic Center on Monday.
