HOW WOULD YOU SPEND $50,000?

You've just come home from work and find a check for $50,000 after taxes in the mailbox. What will you do with it?

That's the dream quiz posed by Victoria Felton-Collins, author of "Couples & Money," to help determine whether you see money as a source of security, freedom, power or love. She gives these possible choices for answers:

A) Make a safe investment, i.e. a certificate of deposit or Treasury bond, to be used toward your children's college education.

B) Take a leave of absence from work and travel to Europe or some other exotic destination.

C) Buy gifts for all your family and friends.

D) Buy a BMW or Mercedes to impress your neighbors.

If you answered "A," you would be considered a Hedger, someone who is security-conscious and afraid to spend money, Felton-Collins says.

"B" means you're a Freewheeler, using money for freedom, to buy choices and options.

"C" means you're a Relator and tend to use money to enhance a relationship.

"D" means you're a Driver, someone who is power-conscious and interested in using money to influence others or make a statement.

Felton-Collins says couples may possess a combination of these traits, although she finds more women fall into the Hedger category and men in the Driver.

"I'm finding more and more women, though, that are becoming both Hedgers and Drivers," she says. "Men tend to move from Driver to Hedger as they get older . . . and then into freedom."
