KNIGHTS RALLY, TRIP PH

Cave Spring's triple threat of the big bang, the big inning and the big blank job was too much for Patrick Henry on Friday.

Dee Dalton's leadoff home run ignited the big inning, the four-run fourth, and pitcher Mark Hazelwood blanked the Patriots for the last two innings as the Knights rallied for a 6-5 Roanoke Valley District baseball victory on the Cave Spring field.

Dalton had two hits and three runs batted in as Cave Spring (5-1, 8-4) won its fourth-straight game. Dalton hit his second homer of the season, this one off losing pitcher Jason Whorley (3-2).

"The first pitch he threw me was a curveball-ball so I was looking for him to come back with a fastball-strike," Dalton said.

Thus began the inning in which the Knights recovered from a 4-2 disadvantage. Keith Spicer doubled in one run, Steve Driscoll had an RBI-single and Hazelwood added a sacrifice fly.

Hazelwood, a left-hander, retired the last nine he faced. Six of his seven strikeouts came in the last three innings.

Hazelwood threw three wild pitches in the first inning, one of which brought leadoff man Whorley home. Patrick Henry (5-2, 9-2) had four of its seven hits to score two more runs in the third.

The Patriots got caught in a pitching bind when ace left-hander Kevin Gabbert went seven innings in a victory over William Fleming on Tuesday. Gabbert came on in relief of Whorley (3-2) in the fourth, but by then, the damage was done.

In other baseball:

At James River, Kevin Alestock hit a three-run home run as Rockbridge defeated the Knights 7-4 in a Pioneer District game.

Kirk Fisher pitched a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 10 and walking four to lead Liberty (9-2, 9-2) past Gretna 6-2 in the Seminole District.

At Salem, Chris Hatcher doubled twice and John Baker struck out 10 as Northside whipped Salem in the Blue Ridge District.

At Glenvar, Chris Graham struck out 10 to lead Glenvar to a 4-2 Pioneer District victory over Natural Bridge.

At Daleville, Chris Guth had a two-run triple and Alleghany capitalized on six walks and two errors to shut out Lord Botetourt 8-0 in a Blue Ridge District game.

At William Byrd, Jeff Overstreet's three-run home run in the second inning led Staunton River to a 9-6 Blue Ridge District victory over William Byrd.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Rob King recorded his fifth shutout of the season and Ryan Shearer and Craig Bagby each scored goals as Martinsville beat Cave Spring 2-0 in a non-district game at Dan Greene Memorial Stadium.

\ SOFTBALL: At Northside, Salem and Northside combined for 62 hits and 27 runs, but it was Northside that came away with a 14-13 Blue Ridge District victory.
