MISS AMERICA RESTRAINED

The Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith asked that the 1990 Miss America, Debbye Turner, refrain from using rap songs with a Christian message in her presentations to public schools.

Jeffrey P. Sinensky of the league's civil rights division said "Christianity may be essential to Turner's personal theme of self-achievement," but "it is inappropriate for her to use a public school platform" to suggest that children need a similar religious commitment.

In response, the chief executive officer of the Miss America Pageant, Leonard Horn, said he has asked Turner not to use Christian songs at state-run schools.
