MURDER FOR HIRE TRY ALLEGED

A Roanoke man was arrested early Sunday and charged with attempted capital murder for hire of a Roanoke businessman.

Stanley Leonard Maxey Jr., 19, of the 1500 block of Bluemont Avenue Southwest, was being held in the Roanoke City Jail without bond.

An arraignment was scheduled for today at 8:30 a.m.

Police said an undercover policeman was contacted late Saturday about negotiating the possible murder of Robert L. Chewning of Shadow Lane Northwest.

Chewning operates Car Brokers, a used-car dealership in Roanoke.

The undercover officer and Maxey then met an off-duty detective in a Williamson Road parking lot near the city limits, police Maj. Jake Viar said.

The detective left the two men, returning later to the parking lot with property belonging to Chewning, and was paid an undisclosed amount of money.

Viar declined to say what the property was or where on Williamson Road the three men met.

Viar also would not say where the suspect first met the undercover policeman, fearing it would blow the officer's cover.

Maxey was arrested shortly afterwards.

No motive behind the plot was given by police.

Viar said police were told by Maxey that he knew Chewning only as a businessman and not as a personal acquaintance.

He also told police he owed a major debt and needed money, but the debt was not owed to Chewning, Viar said.

Chewning fully cooperated with authorities, police said.

Reached by a reporter at home Sunday night, Chewning wouldn't comment on the case.

Police said the man contacted police on his own and they were not led to him through a tip.
