HARDWICK LEADS TEAM IN TECH GOLF BENEFIT

A team led by Virginia Tech golf coach Jay Hardwick won the championship Sunday in the fourth annual Hokie Spring Swing Golf Classic.

Hardwick, Steve Smith, Joe Parsons and Buddy Russell finished at 11-under-par 61 in the captain's choice format on the Blacksburg Country Club course.

The team of Blacksburg golf pro Jim Williams, Joe Thomas, Bill Heasley and Jim Rakes finished second at 62. Also at 62 was the team of Sen. Buzz Emick, Scott Prince, Buddy Moses and Carole Freeman.

The event, which featured Virginia Tech sports personalities, Hall of Famers and former All-Americans, benefits the golf team's scholarship program and has netted $20,000 in the past three years. This year's event is expected to raise $7,000 to $8,000. - Staff report
