BUCS, KINSTON SPLIT

Kinston broke open Sunday's Carolina League baseball game against Salem by putting Chip Duncan through slow torture.

The Indians pecked away at Duncan with six consecutive singles to start the sixth inning. That less-than-booming offense nevertheless gave Kinston four runs in a 9-2, seven-inning victory against the Buccaneers.

Earlier Sunday, the teams resumed a game suspended Saturday in the fourth inning. Salem scored twice in that inning and used three pitchers to stifle the Indians and win 4-1.

Salem is 6-5 and in second place in the Northern Division. Kinston, the Southern Division leader, is 7-4.

In the second game, Salem starter Steve Buckholz gave up a run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth as Kinston broke a 2-2 tie. Duncan then came on to pitch the fateful sixth.

Bucs first baseman Ben Shelton hit a solo home run in the second inning. That was the first run allowed by Kinston starter Jerry Dipoto, formerly of Virginia Commonwealth University, in 14-plus innings this season.

Jamie Allison, Jesse Levis and Brian Johnson each drove in two runs for Kinston in the second game.

In the first game, Salem broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth. After Shelton and Armando Romero walked, Shelton scored on a fielder's choice and Romero came home on a double-play ball.

Butch Schlopy (1-1) is scheduled to start for the Bucs tonight at Peninsula.
