WOMAN RESCUED AFTER BEING TRAPPED IN WELL

A woman broke through the cover of a well in Nottoway County and fell 32 feet to the water before being rescued, authorities said.

P.J. Powell of Appomattox, who had been visiting friends at a farm, had gone for a walk Sunday, stood on the well cover and fell in when it broke. She spent half an hour with her knees wedged against the side of the 3-foot-wide well before someone heard her cries and called for help.

She was tired and bruised but otherwise unharmed in the ordeal. - Associated Press
