LETTERS FROM MOM

Maybe it was the right advice at a critical moment. Maybe it was an assurance of love when the world seemed cruel. Or an anecdote about the folks at home that made you laugh out loud and chased your homesickness away.

Letters from our mothers have a magical power to delight and warm us. And on Mother's Day, we'd like to share that magic and honor the mothers who make it happen.

On Sunday, May 13, the Extra section will publish "Letters From Mom," excerpts from selected letters our readers have received from their mothers. If you have a letter that you would like to submit, here's what to do:

Send only photocopies of letters, not originals. Items sent to us will not be returned.

Only one letter per person, please.

If the writing is hard to read or is faded, please include a typed transcript.

Include your name, address and daytime telephone number. If there were special circumstances that prompted the letter, or if it had a particular impact, please include a brief explanation.

Any letter you have received from your mother is eligible, whether it was written 50 years ago or last week. Letters will be edited for brevity.

Send your entries to\ Letters From Mom, Features Dept., Roanoke Times & World-News, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke, Va. 24010-2491.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. May 2.
