MONTGOMERY HOMELESS SHELTER FUND ADDING UP

The board of directors of the Montgomery County Community Shelter says its fund-raising efforts have begun to yield results.

The pancake breakfast on March 24 at Blacksburg Baptist Church raised about $700; the Easter egg hunt in the Woodbine housing development in Blacksburg on April 7 raised $90; during Parents Weekend at Virginia Tech, the Residents Hall Foundation raised about $1,100; and the Radford Progressive Student Alliance at Radford University raised $300.

The board said shelter income for March was $11,048.87. The directors decided to use $10,707 of that to pay off one of two loans on the new shelter at 710 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg.

The board will soon begin sending periodic newsletters to those who have made donations. People who want to be put on the mailing list may call New River Community Action at 386-6186 and ask for Carol Johnson or Terry Smusz.

The next meeting on the shelter will be May 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Christiansburg Presbyterian Church.
