HERCULES QUARTERLY EARNINGS OFF 25

Hercules Inc. reported Monday that its net income for the first quarter was $33.7 million, or 72 cents per share, down 25 percent from the $44.8 million earned during the 1989 quarter. Sales for the first quarter were $771.4 million, up from $739.4 million a year ago.

Hercules operates the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and a packaging film business in Covington.

Film and aerospace declined during the quarter, the company said. Covington plant manager Barry Jones said his plant was producing the same volume of film, however, and there have been no layoffs.

The company said its paper chemicals, fragrance and food ingredients, and water-soluble polymers business improved. - Staff report
