COUNCIL OKS PLAN; PROPERTY, REAL ESTATE TAXES UNCHANGED

Radford City Council approved the 1990-91 fiscal-year tax plan on Monday, holding the line on real estate and personal property taxes.

The real estate tax will remain at 70 cents per $100 value and personal property taxes will stay at $1.40 per $100 value.

In another matter, Central United Methodist Church was granted approval by council to operate a child-care center on its property.

Barbara Clay, a representative from the church, requested that a child-care center be available at Central United Methodist Church and at property the church owns at Ninth Avenue and Wadsworth Street.

According to Clay, the child care center will be restricted by space as required by social services.

Clay said the center could accommodate 30 preschool children and 30 schoolchildren. She said 20 additional schoolchildren could participate in the child-care center at Ninth Avenue and Wadsworth Street.

Councilman David Worrell asked Clay what the response has been concerning use of the centers.

Clay said more than 35 parents have expressed interest. Council unanimously approved the request.

Council also discussed a hotel/motel room tax.

Following a public hearing, council approved a 2 percent hotel/motel room tax for people who stay under 90 days. No fee will be charged for over 90 days.

This tax will include licensed private hotels and boarding houses. Apartments will not be affected by the tax.

In other matters, council:

Approved Price Partnership's request to close an alley parallel to Lawrence Street. This alley begins at Second Avenue and extends eastward to another alley adjoining the property of Michael Canada. Council approved the request as long as Price Partnership grades two parking spaces for the Canadas.

Approved six additional lots in Wilson Heights be reserved for Virginia Mountain Housing to be used for low income housing.

Awarded the 1990-91 pavement maintenance contract to Virginia Asphalt Paving Co.

Approved a voting machine services contract not to exceed $500 to Virginia Election Services Inc.
