KY. DRUG FIRM MAY BUY ECKERD

Eckerd Drug stores in Virginia may be sold to Begley Drug of Lexington, Ky., Begley officials said.

"The sale is still pending, but it is due to close this week," said Mitch Jacobs of Begley Drug. "They were looking to sell and we were looking to buy."

The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The sale involves 11 stores in Virginia and 26 in eastern Tennessee.

"While these markets do not fit our long-term real estate strategy, we are confident Begley Drug can continue the high level of service our customers have come to expect," Stewart Turrey, chairman of the board and president of Jack Eckerd Corp., said in a news release.

Jacobs said there will be "very few" changes made in the short term, "but significant ones in the long term."
