LEE LIFTS WYTHE INTO DISTRICT RACE

George Wythe pitcher Jamie Lee put new life into the New River District baseball race Tuesday, throwing a four-hitter and striking out nine as the Maroons handed Christiansburg a 3-2 loss.

Christiansburg's Mike Royal gave up only five hits and struck out 10 in the Blue Demons' first league loss in five decisions.

Lee also scored the winning run when he came home on a double by Geoff Goff in the bottom of the seventh to break the tie.

Wythe (2-3) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Franklin Linker scored on a single by Chris Turpin. Christiansburg tied the game in the top of the seventh as Darren Graham singled and stole second, then scored on two errors. He was going to third on a pickoff when the errors occurred.

In other baseball:

After 12 frustrating losses, William Fleming came out a winner Tuesday, defeating Franklin County 4-3 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

David Nimmo (1-3) pitched the victory for the host Colonels (1-7, 1-12), and catcher Kevin Ringley went 2-for-2, including a double. Tim Kepple and Gary Fulk each went 2-for-3, and Fulk scored two runs for Fleming.

At Hot Springs, Kes Phillips ran his personal winning streak to seven games by pitching Bath County to a 13-7 victory over Craig County in a Pioneer District game.

Phillips (7-0) had three hits, including a home run, for the Chargers (11-1), and Chris Williams also had a home run among his three hits.

At Alleghany, Brian Carson hit two home runs as the Mountaineers (5-1, 7-2) swamped Northside 14-5.

At Cave Spring, Mike Fayed homered, doubled and singled to drive in two runs as the Knights whipped Pulaski County 14-5 in a Roanoke Valley District game.

At Floyd, Jeff Freeman hit a two-run triple in the seventh to give Fort Chiswell a 4-3 Mountain Empire District victory over Floyd County. The Pioneers started with a 2-0 lead in the first when Chris Wallace hit a home run with a man on base. Floyd is 3-2 in the district, and Fort Chiswell is 3-3.

At Independence, Jason Taylor broke a 5-5 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run homer as Grayson County (4-0, 9-2) earned its ninth straight victory with an 11-7 Mountain Empire District win over Shawsville (2-2, 8-4).

At Rocky Gap, Narrows (4-0, 8-2) pounded out a 13-3 victory over Rocky Gap. Chris Dunford had two singles and a double to drive in two runs, and Mason Bragg went five innings for his second win. He struck out four, walked two and gave up five hits.

At Glenvar, Mike Siers pitched a three-hitter as Covington defeated Glenvar 6-3.

At Daleville, Donnie Meador had three RBI and knocked in the winning run as Lord Botetourt (4-2, 7-4) defeated Staunton River 8-7 in eight innings. Doug Witcher hit two home runs, one with two outs in the seventh inning, and collected four RBI for Staunton River (2-4, 4-5).

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Rustburg, Jefferson Forest kept its second-place Seminole District standing with a 5-2 victory over Rustburg. John Cornelius scored three goals, and Ryan Beester scored twice and had an assist for the Cavaliers.

Neal Leahy scored his second goal of the game, on a penalty kick in the second overtime, to give Pulaski County a 3-2 Roanoke Valley District victory over William Fleming.

\ SOFTBALL: Liberty won its 12th consecutive game, scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Appomattox 7-6 in a Seminole District game at Liberty.

Tammy Wilcher doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning and, after a walk, scored the winning run on a throwing error. Pam Overstreet and Wilcher each went 2-for-3 for Liberty (12-0), and Devon Witt drove in two runs on sacrifice flies.

At Northside, the Vikings held off Alleghany for a 9-8 win to remain unbeaten in the Blue Ridge District. Kathy Dampeer homered for Northside.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: In Floyd, it was 4-4 as the Floyd County-Fort Chiswell Mountain Empire District match came down to the last doubles' match.

Floyd's Donnie Sutpin and Justin Lewis lost the first set 6-2, then pulled out the match for themselves and the team by winning 6-4, 7-5.
