VETERAN SELECTED AS TEACHER OF YEAR

A longtime teacher at Boiling Spring Elementary School has been chosen as teacher of the year in the Alleghany Highlands school system.

Mike Snead, who teaches sixth- and seventh-grade math and language arts classes, has taught at the school for 18 years.

Snead was cited by the school system for his efforts "to nurture a positive attitude in his students for education and community pride."

Described in a news release as enthusiastic and dedicated to education, Snead believes the dropout rate and the number of "latch key" adolescents are public issues affecting education. Snead will address the two problems, and suggest causes, as part of his participation in the 1991 Virginia Teacher of the Year competition.

Snead is a graduate of Randolph-Macon College and Radford University. He and his wife, Harriet, a guidance counselor at Alleghany High School, have one daughter, Adrienne.
