BUCS BLANK PILOTS

Ben Shelton's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning scored Brian Morrison to give the Salem Buccaneers their first run and they went on to a 5-0 victory over the Peninsula Pilots in Carolina League baseball Tuesday night.

Tim Wakefield (2-1) pitched eight innings of shutout ball for the Bucs. He allowed eight Pilots hits, struck out one, walked none and hit one batter. Jeff Neely pitched the ninth, striking out all three Pilots he faced.

Salem (7-6) and Peninsula (3-9) conclude their three-game series today at 7 p.m. John Latham is the Bucs' scheduled starter. The Pilots won Monday night's game 5-3.

\ BUCSHOTS: During the weekend in Kinston, N.C., the Pittsburgh Pirates made a roster move by promoting outfielder Brian "Bam-Bam" Morrison from extended spring training to Salem. To make room on the Bucs' roster, third-string catcher Nelson Caraballo was given his unconditional release. Morrison, 23, was acquired by the Pirates in early April in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for minor-league catcher Joe Szekely. Morrison hit .242 with 16 home runs and 52 RBI at Dunedin of the Class A Florida State League last season. He finished the year in Class AA Knoxville, getting 26 at-bats in eight games with two homers and three RBI. Morrison was on the Knoxville roster at the time of the trade. . . . For the second week in a row, a Buccaneer has been voted Carolina League hitter of the week. Outfielder Domingo Merejo won the honor by going 10-for-27 (.370) with two doubles, two triples, two home runs and nine RBI. His slugging percentage was .815. Outfielder Greg Sims was honored for the first week of the season.
