TERRIERS TOP SALEM IN SOCCER

William Byrd wasn't about to give up its perennial perch atop the Blue Ridge District in boys' soccer.

The Terriers outlasted Salem 2-0 Tuesday thanks to two assists by Shawn Niday to break a first-place tie between the teams. Byrd (6-0 in the BRD, 9-0 overall) is seeking its fourth crown in the four years the league has declared a soccer champion.

Salem (5-1, 7-2) held its own until 42 seconds before the end of the first half. The Terriers, who had the advantage most of the first 40 minutes, worked Niday free for a shot.

Spartan goalie Bobby Morris deflected the ball but failed to catch it. The rebound came to Byrd's Mark Andrews, who put it in the goal for a 1-0 lead.

"It was a mental mistake on our part. Our goalie misplayed it and then we misplayed the rebound," said Salem coach Walt Braine.

Less than eight minutes into the second half, Niday inbounded the ball to the middle where Todd Etter headed a shot past Morris. It was the perfect pass and perfect play.

"He [Niday] has a knack of putting it right in front of the goal," said Byrd coach Jeff Highfill.

It wasn't quite that easy. "I pick someone in the middle. This time it was Todd. But it's a 50-50 chance," said Niday.

Salem's best opportunity came with 11 minutes left. Phu Tran's head-bob shot in front was stopped by Byrd goalie Dwayne Thompson.

"We had our chances and just didn't convert," said Braine, whose Salem team had lost only to unbeaten Group AA champion Blacksburg 2-1 before Tuesday.
