JMU CHANGES TUITION RATE TO MEET CAP

The executive committee of James Madison University's Board of Visitors on Tuesday approved a 6.4 percent tuition and fees increase for in-state students next year, scaling back the 7.6 percent increase approved by the full board earlier.

The action was made necessary by Gov. Douglas Wilder, who on April 10 placed a 6.5 percent ceiling on tuition increases at state colleges.

Tuition and fees for Virginia residents attending JMU will rise to $3,016 in 1990-91 from $2,834.

The rollback will cost JMU as much as $250,000 in next year's budget, said Linwood Rose, the school's vice president for administration and finance.
