OPERA FUND-RAISER

The Cafe Momus, one of the Paris settings in Puccini'a "La Boheme," will be recreated in a Roanoke warehouse as the scene of a fund-raising party for the Southwest Virginia Opera.

The event is set for Friday, May 4, at 109 Norfolk Ave.

Entertainment will include a French dinner, a juggler, singing by principals from the upcoming SVO production of "La Boheme," Apache dancers, strolling musicians and artists working at their easels.

"We're hoping to win some new opera-goers," said Chris Barnes, spokeswoman for the event. "The idea is to attract people who thought opera was stuffy and to let them know it's really theater and visual art and can be fun."

The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with aperitifs. Dinner will be at 8 p.m.

Tickets are $50 each. Dress is black tie. Those who attend can embellish their outfits with "French touches" if they wish, Barnes said.

On hand to sing for the guests will be "La Boheme" cast members Jeffrey Ambrosini (Marcello), Karen Bogan (Mimi), Jeralyn Refeld (Musetta) and Jeffrey Reynolds (Rodolfo).

Steve Stinson will be the juggler and Marvin Malouf will perform as a strolling accordionist. The Apache dancers, loaned by the Fred Astaire Dance Studio, will be Jeff Nolen and Casey Kerr.

Tickets for the Cafe Momus party can be obtained by calling Southwest Virginia Opera (982-2742) or visiting its offices at 111 W. Campbell Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

"La Boheme" will be presented in Olin Hall May 17, 19 and 21.
