LIBERTY WINS 13TH IN ROW

Liberty extended its winning streak to 13 games Wednesday, but not without a scare. The unbeaten Minettes had to score two runs in a wild sequence with two out in the bottom of the seventh to pull out an 8-7 victory over Buckingham County (5-6) in a Seminole District game at Bedford.

With one out in the seventh, Liberty's Gina Overstreet walked and advanced on a passed ball. After a strikeout, Kelly Witt singled, rounded first and went to second as Buckingham threw home, too late to stop Overstreet's tying run. Meanwhile, Witt headed for third. The Buckingham cathcer's throw to third bounded into left field and Witt came home with the winning run.

In other softball action:

At Martinsville, Laurel Park had 11 hits and Rachel Via helped her cause going 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Lancers beat Patrick County 8-2.

At Glenvar, Kelly Robinson's two-out, three-run triple in the seventh capped an eight-run uprising to lift Salem to a 13-12 victory over Glenvar.

At Rocky Mount, Shelley Bowles struck out 13 en route to her seventh victory as Franklin County beat GW-Danville 3-2.

Bowles has not allowed an earned run all season and has struck out 65.

BOY'S TRACK: Demond Wesley won four events - the long jump, triple jump, 100 and 200 - as Christiansburg dominated the Dandelion Invitational at Radford. The Blue Demons won the three-team meet with 231 points, followed by Radford (140) and Floyd County (80).

At Hillsville, Carroll County's Mike Alexander set a school record in the discus, but Giles won the New River District dual meet 68 1/2-57 1/2. Alexander threw the discus 147 feet, 8 inches to win the event.

GIRL'S TRACK: Pam Lemons won the triple jump and three running events - the 100, 200, and 400 - as Floyd County edged Christiansburg 154-153 to win the Dandelion Invitational at Radford.

Bev Graham (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) and Deidre Dobbins (discus, shot put) won two events each as Radford finished with 144 points.

BASEBALL: Northside railed for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat visiting Blacksburg 6-5 in a nondistrict game. Lewis Conner (2-3) struck out five in pitching three scoreless innings for Northside (4-6).

Reed Cooper hit a two-run homer in the first inning and J.R. Burks pitched a three hitter and struck out five for give Jefferson Forest a 5-2 victory over Nelson County.

BOY'S SOCCER: John Critzer scored a penalty kick against his brother Shep and Lord Botetourt went on to beat James River 7-1 in Buchanan.
