MAN FINED FOR NOT BURYING CALVES

One of the farmers charged with poisoning 13 dogs in Franklin County was found guilty Wednesday of unrelated livestock charges.

Franklin General District Judge William Alexander Jr. levied a $150 fine against Harry A. Bowman of Rocky Mount for failing to bury two dead cows last month.

"No other farmer does that," Alexander told Bowman. "There's no legitimate reason for it. You don't need the law to tell you that dead animals should be buried."

Bowman's attorney, David Melesco, made arrangements Wednesday to appeal to Circuit Court.

Bowman testified that he was arranging to have four stillborn calves buried the day animal control officer Steve Lynch charged him under a county ordinance.

Lynch testified, however, that he had received earlier complaints and had warned Bowman about promptly burying dead livestock. Some of the unburied calves had been dead about a week, Lynch said.

Bowman, his father, Vaiden, and farm hand Gene Strickler face 13 charges each of poisoning dogs at a farm they own in Callaway.

Harry Bowman said Wednesday that the men are innocent of the charges.
