Sunday, Weddle received a silver medal as a semifinalist for the Governor's Award for Volunteering Excellence. Winners of the presidential awards will be announced this week, which is National Volunteer Week.
A resident of the Willis community, Weddle was nominated for the governor's award in recognition of his work with the Station No. 2 Volunteer Fire Department. He has volunteered for more than 20 years, contributing 700 to 800 hours annually.
He initiated efforts to have smoke alarms installed in the homes of Willis Elementary School pupils after a student and members of her family were killed in a house fire during Hurricane Hugo. Weddle also guided the community's construction of a fire station.
Mary Catherine Tanner of Newport also was nominated for a state award. As chairwoman of Giles County's Parent/Community Involvement Team, she gave more than 200 hours to help implement the family life education program proposal. She spoke with individuals and small groups, and conducted research, community meetings and conferences.
