ORDERS, INCOME UP AT INGERSOLL-RAND

Orders during the first quarter of 1990 exceeded $1 billion for the first time in Ingersoll-Rand's history, the company reported Tuesday.

Ingersoll-Rand, whose rock-drill division is based in Roanoke, also reported record first-quarter performance from operations. Sales were $902 million, 13 percent higher than the $802 million in the first quarter of 1989; operating income was $90 million, up 18 percent.

Net earnings were $45.6 million or 86 cents per share, compared with $40.7 million during the quarter last year. - Staff report
