AMP Inc., a Harrisburg, Pa., maker of electronic connection devices with two Roanoke operations, reported a 4 percent rise in earnings and new highs in sales, orders and backlog for the quarter ending March 31. World sales rose 7 percent to a record $764 million; earnings were $79.8 million, up from $77.3 million.

\ Sales of existing homes in March were below 1989 levels for the second straight month as mortgage rates stayed in the double digits, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. Resales of single-family homes totaled 3.4 million units, unchanged from February but down from 3.52 million in January.

\ The St. Louis Sun, which hoped to be the first major metropolitan newspaper to launch successfully in this country since World War II, unexpectedly folded Wednesday after seven months.
