ESTEP SHARP, BUT BUCS FALL

Chris Estep hit a pair of two-run homers for Salem, but Peninsula pitchers Rick Balabon and Rod Poissant shut down the rest of the Buccaneers to give the Pilots a 6-4 Carolina League baseball victory Wednesday night.

Ben Shelton was on base for both homers by Estep, the Bucs' right fielder. Shelton, Salem's first baseman, singled in the fifth inning and walked in the seventh.

The home runs were Estep's second and third of the season. Catcher Armando Romero's single was Salem's only other hit.

Balabon (2-0) pitched seven innings, struck out 10, walked one and gave up the four Bucs hits and four runs, all earned. Poissant pitched two hitless innings to earn his third save of the season for the Pilots (4-9).

Salem starter John Latham (1-1) took the loss, giving up five earned runs in four innings. He allowed seven hits, walked two and struck out three.

Peninsula won two of three games against Salem. The Bucs (7-7) return to Salem Municipal Field tonight to begin a seven-game homestand. Paul Miller is scheduled to pitch against Kinston.
