CRIMINAL CASE BEGINS OVER IRAQI `SUPER GUN'

Customs officials on Wednesday began criminal proceedings against a British man accused of being involved in developing a suspected "super gun" project for Iraq.

Christopher Cowley was charged with involvement in the attempted illegal export of equipment, a customs spokesman said.

Sheffield Forgemasters, which made the eight giant tubes that the government claims are part of a gun, has identified Cowley as its main contact on the project.

Cowley was employed by Space Research Corp., based in Belgium, which was founded by cannon designer Gerald Bull. Bull, a Canadian-born American citizen, was murdered in Brussels last month.

Bull's son, Michel Bull, has said that Cowley left the company in 1988. The family announced last week that the company was going out of business.
