VIKINGS RALLY PAST INDIANS

Northside scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat visiting Blacksburg 6-5 Wednesday in a non-district high school baseball game.

Lewis Conner (2-3) struck out five in pitching three scoreless innings for Northside (4-6).

Chris Hatcher began the Vikings' charge when he reached on an error. After Mickey Catron walked, Bobby Foster scored Hatcher on a fielder's choice and Catron went to second. Another walk pushed Catron to third, and, after a strikeout, Steve Bauer's suicide squeeze bunt brought home Catron with the winning run.

Reed Cooper hit a two-run homer in the first inning and J.R. Burks pitched a three-hitter and struck out five to give Jefferson Forest a 5-2 victory over Nelson County in a Seminole District game.

\ SOFTBALL: Liberty extended its winning streak to 13 games, but not without a scare. The unbeaten Minettes had to score two runs in a wild sequence with two out in the bottom of the seventh to pull out an 8-7 victory over Buckingham County (5-6) in a Seminole District game at Bedford.

At Glenvar, Kelly Robinson's two-out, three-run triple in the seventh capped an eight-run uprising that gave Salem a 13-12 victory over Glenvar.

Reliever Debbie Cobb came on in the second inning after Glenvar had scored all of its runs. Cobb blanked Glenvar on four hits the rest of the way to gain her first victory for Salem (7-2).

Glenvar (8-3) was paced by Heather Browning and Cammi Beason, who each had three hits.

At Daleville, Becky Meacham had three hits and five RBI, and Donna Shelton pitched a one-hitter as Lord Botetourt blasted Cave Spring 19-5 in a non-district game. The Cavaliers improved their record to 9-2; Cave Spring is 5-6.

At Lynchburg, Heritage used one hit, two errors and six walks to score six runs in the sixth inning and went on to an 8-2 victory over Patrick Henry in a non-district game.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: John Critzer converted a penalty kick against his brother Shep and Lord Botetourt went on to beat James River 7-1 in Buchanan.

Joey Hoyt and Shawn Callahan each scored two goals for the Cavaliers.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: Neither team could score in overtime, but Cave Spring won the Roanoke Valley District championship by tying Patrick Henry 1-1.

Jennifer Kagey's goal, assisted by Lisa Kahle, gave Cave Spring a 1-0 first-half lead, and Patrick Henry's Beth Prillaman tied the score on an assist by Liz Wedemeyer in the second half. Cave Spring is 5-1-1, and Patrick Henry is 5-3-1.
