WILDER SIGNS MEASURE ON SMOKING LIMITS

Representatives of the tobacco, health, farm and food industries crowded into the governor's conference room Wednesday to watch him sign a landmark bill to limit smoking in public.

Gov. Douglas Wilder signed the House version of the compromise bill drafted by Del. Richard Cranwell, D-Vinton, and Sen. Thomas J. Michie Jr., D-Albemarle. The governor signed the Senate version in a ceremony last week.

The bill that takes effect July 1 will ban smoking in indoor cashier lines, hospital emergency rooms, school common areas, school buses and elevators.
