FDA DROPS OPPOSITION TO HOME AIDS TESTING

The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that it had reconsidered its long opposition to the idea of testing for AIDS in the home and would accept applications for approval of such test kits.

Dr. Paul D. Parkman of the FDA said the agency was already considering one application to market a test that would allow people to draw a blood sample at home, mail it to a laboratory and get the results anonymously over the telephone.

Parkman said that the recent availability of treatment for those infected with the AIDS virus, particularly those who have early or no signs of the disease, has made it more important to identify people infected with the AIDS virus who might be reluctant to be tested at clinics or doctors' offices. - The New York Times
