BOY KILLED AS WALL FALLS DURING STORM

The wall of a building under construction in Spotsylvania County collapsed Wednesday during a thunderstorm, killing a teen-ager, authorities said.

Three of the seven workers on the site were injured, said Sam Clegg, shift supervisor at the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Department.

The accident occurred about 4:06 p.m. as high winds from a thunderstorm passed through the area of the Lee Hill Industrial Park, Clegg said. The park is just off Virginia 2 and U.S. 17, just south of the city.

Winds at Shannon Airport, a local facility within a mile of the site, were measured at 5 mph at the time with gusts up to 32 mph, he said.

Clegg said Russell Burks, 19, of Mountain Grove, Mo., suffered a broken neck and other injuries and was transferred by helicopter from Mary Washington Hospital to Washington Hospital Center on Wednesday night.

Clegg said the victim was 16, was a stepbrother of Burks, and also was from Mountain Grove, Mo.
