CAR THEFT ATTEMPT FAILS WHEN GIRLS HIT SIGN

A car theft plotted by two girls, ages 11 and 12, was foiled Tuesday when the car was backed over a sign in the parking lot of a Roanoke hotel.

Police said the girls got into a 1990 rental car parked at the Airport Marriott on Hershberger Road and tried to drive away.

But after backing over a sign, the girls fled and were caught a short time later.

An Arkansas man in town on business told police that he had mistakenly left the keys in the car. Hotel officials said they had seen the two girls peering into cars in the parking lot shortly before the 10:30 a.m. incident.

The girls, who were turned over to the Youth Bureau, told police that they had just left school and were on their way to a shopping mall.
