NEIGHBORS CELEBRATES A DECADE

Dear Readers:

Neighbors is kicking off its 10th anniversary celebration with today's editions.

These "zoned" pages of the Roanoke Times & World-News first appeared April 3, 1980. They were called Neighborhoods pages then, and ran on the inside of the second section of the Thursday afternoon edition.

Bob Adams, the first editor, said the purpose of the expanded report was to get more grass-roots news of clubs, individuals and smaller communities into our daily paper.

The newspaper, Adams said, wanted to get out into the community more and to get back into the paper the items and feature stories that had been crowded out by general-interest news.

Neighborhoods also was launched to let smaller businesses advertise in just a part of the Roanoke Valley, instead of throughout Western Virginia.

Thirteen months later, on May 21, 1981, the separate tabloid-size Neighbors sections were introduced. Circulation was extended to the morning paper and Bedford County. Readership quickly exceeded the 60 percent mark among our circulation and now is at 69,876 a week.

Over the years, the sections have grown, and you, our readers, have been helpful in sending us news about your neighborhoods.

As a result of your suggestions, we have made changes - adding, for example, a monthly listing of support groups.

Although many stories and listings appear in only one of the Neighbors sections, we try to publish some things, such as the listings of births, governmental and community meetings, throughout the metro area.

Because of space limitations and the high volume of information we receive, we're not always able to publish items as quickly or in as many of the sections as we would like. If your story does not appear immediately in the section distributed in your region, we hope you will bear with us.

Because of our early printing deadlines, we ask that you mail your news to us at Neighbors, Box 2491, Roanoke 24010, at least two weeks before an event.

As part of our anniversary, we will have special stories and promotions throughout the rest of the year. We hope that you will participate.

Thank you for being faithful readers.
