ALCOHOL-FREE PROM PARTIES AIM AT SAFETY

Several schools in the Roanoke Valley and supporting organizations are sponsoring alcohol- and drug-free after-prom parties to help keep prom-goers from driving and drinking.

Most of the schools had such parties last year, but this is the first year that the Roanoke Area Youth Substance Abuse Coalition, a non-profit organization, is sponsoring a grand finale party. The coalition will give prizes to five finalists from each of 20 area schools. Last year, several businesses and organizations worked with the schools to promote after-prom parties and gave away gifts.

To become a finalist for the coalition's contest, students must stay at their after-prom parties from the beginning until the end. One student will win a 1990 Isuzu pickup truck from Royal Buick/Isuzu in Salem. The dealership and a radio station gave away a truck last year to a student who attended an after-prom party.

"This is the first year we've helped coordinate a party,` said Mary Gwen Parker, secretary/treasurer of the coalition. "Last year we helped with individual after-prom parties."

The coalition will hold its grand finale June 9 at Valley View Mall from 10 a.m. until shortly after midnight, Parker said. The finalists will compete on a game show for prizes that include a television set, VCR, jam box and a Genesis game.

The first prom is scheduled for this weekend. Berean Christian Academy and Roanoke Valley Christian Schools will have banquets instead of proms. Berean's junior-senior banquet is a Blue Water Cruise on the Virginia Dare on Friday. Roanoke Valley Christian Schools' banquet is May 11 at the Hidden Valley Country Club.
