NEW RIVER PEOPLE

\ TONY FENTON was chosen 1989 Member of the Year by the Blacksburg Fire Department. Fenton, who joined the department in November 1986, was cited for his willingness to help train new members and for assisting with fire prevention and fire safety programs in addition to the regular duties of a firefighter.

\ Watercolor paintings by two Blacksburg artists have been accepted in the 30th Irene Leache Memorial Exhibition at The Chrysler Museum in Norfolk. Accepted were "Machine Parts I" by NADINE C. ALLEN and "Aloe IV" by CAROLE C. DAVIS. Their works will be on display May 13 through July 8.

MARK HERTEL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bradley Hertel of Blacksburg, is among 70 students from the Interlochen Arts Academy Band who will perform in several Michigan communities as part of the 16th Annual Interlochen Outreach Tour. The fine arts high school is located in northwest Michigan. Hertel, a sophomore, will be playing oboe at each performance.

\ New River Community College graduated seven new geriatric nursing assistants: JULIE M. COMBS, MELISSA J. HIGHT, LISA R. SUMMERS and MARY J. WARD of Dublin; CAROLINE S. JONES from Radford; JENNIFER R. KING of Ivanhoe; and LILLIE F. NESTER of Pulaski. The students completed clinical training at the Pulaski Health Care Center through the college's geriatric nursing assistant training program.

\ Members of the Montgomery County 4-H Livestock Club competed successfully in the livestock judging and junior stockman's contests sponsored by the Virginia Tech Block and Bridle Club held March 30-31.

The Montgomery County A team, comprised of SUZANNE SHELBURNE, OLIVIA SHORTER, WILL WHITTIER and MIKE STILES, placed second out of 59 teams in the junior stockman's competition, which tests knowledge of the livestock industry. SUZANNE SHELBURNE placed second overall, while OLIVIA SHORTER was fourth and MIKE STILES, fifth.

The team also placed second in the official livestock judging contest. SUZANNE SHELBURNE placed sixth out of 155 individuals and OLIVIA SHORTER was eighth.

\ Members of the 1990 New River Valley Mall Teen Board are:\ JACKIE BURKE, LESLEY WERT, ANGELA HOWARD, ERICA KIRKNER, MINDY GALES, TERRI KISER, SHARON HALE, SUSIE EMMETT, SHERRY HAMILTON, STACY BROCE and\ HOLLY WATSON. The teen board is made up of high school girls ages 16 and 17. The board works on quarterly projects for the community as well as fashion shows, freeze modeling and other promotions.

\ ERIC L. BECKER, son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel A. Becker of Christiansburg, earned an honorable mention on the Roanoke College faculty's list for the fall term. To be named to the list, a student must be enrolled in at least four units during the term and maintain a 3 to 3.49 grade point average with no grade below a `C'. Becker is a Christiansburg High School graduate.

\ DEAN FRANTZ recently was named co-recipient of the Outstanding Senior in Agriculture award at Ferrum College. Frantz, the son of Sally Jo Frantz and Nevin R. Frantz of Blacksburg, will receive graduate from Ferrum on May 6.
