AT LEAST I KEEP MY TOENAILS CUT

NEW YORK (AP)

American women increasingly believe most men are mean, manipulative, oversexed, self-centered and lazy, according to a survey released Wednesday. And the women are getting annoyed.

First of all, just let me say here that it has been my impression for a very big number of years that women have always been annoyed with men.

Apparently women inherit this from their mothers as a sex-related characteristic.

I would also like to say that women, as far as I know, have always looked upon men as being mean, manipulative, oversexed, self-centered and lazy.

Oh, they have never come right out and said it:

"All right, you mean, manipulative, oversexed, self-centered and lazy scumbag, get off the couch this instant and do something useful, you filthy-minded creature, you."

Still, many men have lived long, useful lives despite being looked upon as second-class citizens.

Sure. Some of these slobs are so mean they don't cut their toenails, and they end up in the emergency room, where they bring lasting shame on their families by having these really hideous toenails.

Some of us can't really see this as a valid criticism of our habits.

We do not believe, for example, that a famous heart surgeon would go home after a long day and tell his wife:

"Did a brilliant triple bypass today, Dora, but the patient's toenails were really quite disgusting."

We have always been accused of being manipulative - although most of us don't understand what that means.

If it means years of faithful and selfless devotion to job and family, then we are guilty.

I am very near tears here just thinking about the above, although I doubt most women would accuse us of doing something like that.

As for the charge of being self-centered and lazy, I think I first heard that one from this little blonde girl who was my roller-skating partner when we were both 5 years old.

She was not after my body. I had the only skate key on the block.

You really alert readers will notice that I have not mentioned this matter of being oversexed, except in passing.

This is a family newspaper, and you don't want to get into such things in any detail.

I mean, toenail-cutting is one thing. Being oversexed is another.

I do believe, however, that Eve laid that one on Adam very soon after that business with the fruit.

And then she said: "Why did I have to get stuck with a sex fiend who's mean, manipulative, self-centered and lazy and never cuts his toenails?"
