CLINCH ALUMNI GROUP FIGHTS NAME CHANGE

The Clinch Valley College Alumni Association has added its opposition to any change in the name of the college.

Its board of directors voted unanimously earlier this month to recommend against any change.

Of the graduates responding to an alumni survey, 39.57 percent favored a name change; 58.87 percent were against it; and 1.56 percent did not care. Those favoring a change suggested more than 50 different names.

A General Assembly resolution to change the name to the University of Virginia at Wise died in the Senate Rules Committee March 5 as urged by outgoing University of Virginia President Robert O'Neil.

He said the changes in the presidency and nearly half the university's board members made this a bad time to study the feasibility of changing the name of the university's branch college.
