CAMPSITE OPTIONS EASY TO FIND

There are five National Park campgrounds along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and numerous private campgrounds throughout the Outer Banks.

The park campgrounds have modern rest rooms and cold showers. Each site includes grills and tables. Except for Ocracoke, they are not on a reservation system, but we have found it easy to find a site, and on holiday weekends we just arrive before the noon checkout time to stake out a nice spot. Oregon Inlet, Cape Point and Ocracoke are tentatively open from April 13 through Oct. 29; Frisco, May 22 through Sept. 4; and Salvo, May 26 through Sept. 4.

Sites are $10 a day (Ocracoke is $12 a day during its reservation period of May 25-Sept. 3) and do not accommodate more than six people or two vehicles each. Reservation tickets for Ocracoke sites may be purchased through Ticketron, in person or by mail (Ticketron, P.O. Box 62429, Virginia Beach 23462). Private campgrounds include hookups and their rates start at $10 a day. A list of these facilities is available through the Dare County Tourist Bureau, P.O. Box 399, Manteo, N.C. 27954 (919-473-2138). -Sarah Cox
