For one thing, you don't need a $16,000, gadget-laden bass boat to win it. You don't need a boat at all.
Nor do you need be be a grizzled veteran.
Last year, Anthony Hackney, a 15-year-old from Big Rock, was fishing from a dock when he reeled in the winner, a 10.86-pound catfish. Hackney took home $1,200.
"It is family-type fishing," said Bill Najjum, the tournament chairman.
The contest, which begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday and runs through noon Sunday, has categories for largemouth bass, muskie, crappie, smallmouth bass, catfish and walleye.
In addition, there is a youth tournament for carp and sunfish on Saturday.
Ticket sales have been slow, but Najjum remains optimistic they will pick up this week. Last year, 820 fishermen participated.
The revenue from the event is used for the club's youth projects.
The entry fee is $15. A ticket for the youth contest costs $1.
The headquarters is Foxsport XIV Marine camp.
Tickets are available at tackle shops and marinas and must be purchased by 7:30 p.m. Thursday, except at Foxsport, where they are available through 7:30 a.m. Friday.
Last year, there was no winner in the muskie category. The top weights in other divisions were largemouth, 6.78 pounds; smallmouth, 4.02; crappie, 1.78; walleye, 7.54; and catfish, 10.86.
