Some coal miners can quote from their union contracts the way they do from the
Bible. Above, Joseph Brummett, Cleveland Combs and Radfert Rhea (left to
right) talk over a copy of the proposed contract. Many miners grumbled about
the flexible work schedules the union had agreed to. Nevertheless, the union
miners ratified the contract Feb. 19, 1990, although the 2-to-1 margin was
closer than expected. But union members were all smiles the next day when UMW
Vice President Cecil Roberts (at right, in suit) announced the 11-month-old
strike was over. B&W.
