Despite the union's vow of non-violence, the spark of violence was never far away. At lower left, a state trooper questions a replacement worker who had brandished a gun against strikers. At one point, a confrontation between strikers and replacement workers driving Pittston coal trucks turned bloody.

The trucker (above, left) claimed strikers pelted him with rocks and smashed his jaw; in the confusion, one trucker ran into seven picketers (below, right), sending two of them to the hospital.

Strike leader Marty Hudson rushed to a retired coal miner who doubled as a minister and the Rev. Harry Whittaker led the men in prayer: "Don't cause no violence or nothing." That cooled the crowd's passion. color.
