A miner whittles away the time, a common sight on the picket line at Moss 3.
Some strikers simply reduced their cedar sticks to shavings and started over
again; others produced genuine works of folk art. When Labor Secretary
Elizabeth Dole visited the picket lines in October 1989, one striker presented
her with a ball-and-chain he had whittled - a symbol of the strike, he said.
