Strikers were deviously clever in the different ways they carried out their protests. Often strikers would wait until a coal truck turned into the entrance to Pittston's Moss 3 coal-cleaning plant, then rush to block its way.

That either forced the drivers to back up, a difficult maneuver even without the distraction of jeering strikers, or, as above, made the troopers carry the strikers the long way around to the prison buses. At right, UMW President Richard Trumka shares a thought with the Rev. Jesse Jackson. B&W
