#7 PHOTS BY DON PETERSEN.

When strike leaders Marty Hudson, Jackie Stump and C.A. Phillips were jailed in Roanoke on contempt-of-court charges, the union women followed. For two weeks, Linda Addair (left), Wanda Yates and other wives and daughters kept a vigil outside - waving flags, singing hymns and union anthems.

One night, they held candles and formed a cross. The jailed men later said it was the most beautiful sight they'd ever seen. Throughout the women's stay, Roanokers showered them with food, shelter and donations. B&W.
