WASHBOARD EFFECT IS ONLY TEMPORARY

Q: What has happened to the road near Exit 44? It seems to have been repaired, but it feels like you're driving over a washboard. Is it going to be left this way? - B.C., Botetourt County

A: You are referring to a partially repaired 1.1 mile section of U.S. 11 between Route 1001 (site of the old Cloverdale Mill) and the new Alternate Route 220.

What appear to be speed bumps or rumble strips on the surface are actually patches, said Mac McDaniel of the Virginia Department of Transportation. These will be covered to provide a smooth surface when this section of road is paved.

The work is expected to take two or three weeks to complete.

Credit repair rip-offs

If you're one of the many people who have lost several hundred dollars to a so-called "credit repair" firm, the National Center for Financial Education wants to hear your story.

The San Diego-based non-profit consumer organization is gathering data from consumers nationwide. It hopes to present the findings to Congressional sub-committees that will hold hearings on proposals to regulate these types of individual counselors and agencies.

According to testimony before a House subcommittee last year, there are some 240 million credit files kept on American consumers. Of the 9 million people who asked to see their files last year, about 3 million challenged their credit reports; credit bureaus agreed to update or correct about 2.25 million files, according to the center.

Send comments to the National Center for Financial Education C-R Scams, P.O. Box 34070, San Diego, Calif. 92103-0780. If you include a stamped self-addressed envelope with your letter, you will receive free instructions on how to check your credit file and make changes.
