STUDENTS PLACE FIRST IN STATE ODYSSEY

Three Roanoke area teams and another from Montgomery County placed first Saturday in the state Odyssey of the Mind competition at the College of William and Mary.

All four teams advance to the World Odyssey of the Mind May 31-June 2 at Iowa State University.

Odyssey of the Mind is an extracurricular event that encourages young people from kindergarten through high school to play mental games with the same enthusiasm and precision as they play physical games. It stresses exercise and amusement for the mind.

Western Virginia sent 26 teams (182 students) to the state event, in which about 1,600 students participated. Participants took on six different challenges calling for original approaches to problems in locomotion, animation, classics, recycling, nature and engineering.

Hidden Valley Jr. High finished first in Recycle, Division II. Team members Peter Nevin, Robert Herchenrider, Andy Newton, Kris Wiseley, Anne Schleupner and David Allen were coached by Diane Herchenrider and Lynn Schleupner.

The Community School was first in Seven Wonders of the World, Division II. Team members were Mark Finney, Erica Hodgins, Debra Kershan, Brooke Shoenfield, Colleen Wagner and Javan Monday. Judi Finney and Penny Monday were the coaches.

Gilbert Linkous Elementary Team B from Montgomery County finished first in Omitronic Humor, Division I. Anne Brinckman, Akio Robrecht, Adam Schweitzer, David Andwaris, Lisa Rossi, Scott Alexander and Forest Schweitzer were coached by Aline Brinckman.

In Omitronic Humor, Division III, James River High School was first. The team of Alex McRae, Tracy Kolb, Jason Thomas, Suzanne Wright, Peter Cleveland, John Miller and Karla Miller was coached by Paula Miller and Judy Imhoff.

Botetourt Intermediate was third in Geographic Odyssey, Division II, and Northside High was third in the Seven Wonders of the World, Division III - Staff report
