COAL TRAIN ENGINEER SUES IN '88 COLLISION

The engineer of a coal train that rammed into a caboose stopped on the tracks at Wasena Park in Roanoke two years ago has filed a $250,000 lawsuit against Norfolk and Western Railway.

David Thompson White, who was injured in the accident, claims the railroad "carelessly and negligently" failed to provide him with a safe workplace and safe equipment the day of the April 18, 1988, accident.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Roanoke Circuit Court, did not elaborate.

The collision derailed the caboose and one loaded coal car of the stationary train, as well as the engine of the moving train.
