BLOCK WATCH ORGANIZED TO COMBAT GANG CRIME

Residents fed up with escalating gang crime and violence in their neighborhood are organizing a block watch program and are cooperating with police.

From January to April, there were seven break-ins in Roland Park, as many as occurred in all of 1989, said resident Kathy Niece.

On March 26, about 125 people attended a crime prevention meeting at the 2nd Patrol Division and demanded increased police protection. An officer said their best protection was to start a block security program.
