AEP SEES NO NEED FOR ACID-RAIN LAWS

American Electric Power has "a long-standing commitment to live in harmony with the environment" and continues to believe there is no urgency for legislation on acid rain, AEP Chairman W.S. White Jr. said at the annual stockholders meeting of Appalachian Power's parent at South Bend, Ind., this week.

White backed an industry report saying that a vigorous clean-coal technologies program would save society $200 billion to $400 billion. The report by the Electric Power Research Institute said a clean-coal program would be much cheaper than a massive retrofitting of generation plants required by pending legislation. - Staff report
